Traditional door construction requires producing your own raised panels out of 5/8"' to 3/4" thick solid wood leaving a 1/4" thick tongue around the outside edge. Stile & Rail bits cut the matching 1/4" wide groove for the raised panel. However, if you would rather use common 7/32" (5.5mm) thick plywood or hardwood panels in your door construction, the 1/4" groove is too wide to provide a good fit. The solution is Whiteside's line of Stile & Rail Router Bits designed to cut the 7/32" tongue and groove required in this application. If you already own a Whiteside
standard set there is a conversion kit for changing the 1/4" tongue to
the 7/32" tongue. Made in the
USA by Whiteside Machine Company

Tip!
Making Stile & Rail Glass Doors Make the stile & rail cuts for glass doors using a standard stile & rail 2 piece set. No extra components are required. Just stagger the cutting edges and "stack" both groovers on the stile bit. Use both bearings (no groover) on the rail bit. See drawing. Now make your cuts just like in normal door construction - cut the inside edges of all four pieces with the stile bit. Trim the ends of the rails with the rail bit. Assemble door and insert glass pane. Use clips or corner trim mold on the back side to hold the pane in place. |
